Keep Moving Forward With Your Dog by Teaching Him Not to Pull
Dog walks are the act of an individual walking with a dog, usually from his or her home and bringing the dog to a designated area and returning back later. Leashes are most commonly used for such. Both pets and owners get several advantages, such as companionship and exercise. However, there are some problems that arise from having dog walks. This article discusses these problems so that you may be aware of them when making plans to have your dog walk.
- One problem is money. It would be great if every family had enough money to go for walks with their dogs, but that rarely happens. When you factor in how much money you need to pay for dog park fees, along with the cost of fuel for a trip to the park, it can be very expensive to take your pet for a walk. In addition, if you do not have a lot of money to spend on trips, it may be more convenient to just buy an extra bag of dog supplies or to put together a nice package of treats for your dog to enjoy instead.
- Another possible problem is time. While every day is appropriate for walking your dog, dogs need time to become accustomed to being outside. For example, if you were going to walk your dog in the morning and again at night, it would be more helpful to take your pet for walks every day than to take it for two hours in the middle of the day, where it becomes accustomed to being out all day long.
- Then, there is also the issue of scheduling. Having to take your dog for walks on a regular basis is not ideal for pet owners, since it makes them feel like they are doing something good for their animals. You do want to walk your puppy on walks every day, since it will eventually become more familiar with going outside, but it may take a while for your puppy to become accustomed to this routine. If you are in a hurry and cannot afford daily walks, you might consider puppy boot camps, which can provide the benefit of outdoor exercise for your puppy in a fun, shorter, less stressful environment. Boot camps usually last about three days, during which your puppy gets lots of attention, positive reinforcement, and other positive aspects of training that will help your puppy adjust well to real-world situations.
- If your dog has become accustomed to going outside without pulling on the leash, and you have taken it for walks on a semi-regular basis, then you might be experiencing some problems with your dog. One of the most common problems you will experience when it comes to dogs, is that they pull on the leash whenever they see another dog on the road. While this behavior can be frustrating to you, it is normal, since your dog does not know that another dog exists on the loose. The solution to this problem is simply to teach your dog to pull away when another dog is present.
For many dog owners, the best method of teaching a dog not to pull is through positive reinforcement. Giving your dog praise whenever he keeps moving forward, and treats and rewards whenever he stops and goes back will train him well to keep moving forward without pulling. You can also use a loose leash while walking your dog to keep him on a leash. This will train him to stay by your side and not pull ahead of you.
