Say Dog in French
If you have ever thought about taking your pet dog to a French restaurant then you may want to rethink the idea. Why? Well there are a few reasons. One being they are not actually French. So to make things worse they may actually serve you with food poisoning instead of French food! OK, so here is the first big one.
- The word for dog in French is rintemps and if used as a verb it translates into something mean as well as bad, such as lousy, mean, horrid, smelly or just plain nasty. For instance, when saying “le rintemps” (in French) this means lousy luck or bad luck, but when used as a noun it means something like “a pet dog of royalty”. OK, so now we know the French language isn’t always kind. Next comes the problem with pet names. We have a ton of choices of pet names already given to our pets all the time, how do you choose the right name for your dog?
- Chien-de-la-jollandaise is actually a very common name for French dogs, and it is pretty cool name too. Another popular one is Chien-il-monseau which means ‘nameless, without a dog’. I’m not sure why that one is considered unacceptable but maybe it has something to do with the fact that the dog is basically an untouchable creature that you don’t need to refer to by its name. The only other option that would work is Chien-monoiser, which simply translates as ‘dog of man’ but obviously that isn’t quite as cool a name.
- Now, if you really want to give your pet a French name, there are a few rules you have to follow. The most important one is that your pet name must be French. If you’re not French, then it doesn’t matter because most dogs are French by default anyways. Some of the exceptions are Labradors and Bulldogs, but these animals tend to have English as their native language and you shouldn’t force them to sound like they speak English. They will still probably sound weird to English speakers, especially if it’s a foreign language.
- When choosing a French word to use for your dog un pet, you have to make sure that it’s pronounced correctly. There are many different ways to pronounce French words and it’s important that they are pronounced the way their creators wanted them to be pronounced so that the meaning behind it is clear. Unfortunately, many of the words that were created originally for cats are also used for dogs and vice versa.
Some of the most common words used to describe dogs in France are “le petit parrot” which means tiny or small-necked parrot, “pour un cafe” meaning to drink coffee in a French cafe, “mon grand amour” which means great love’ or, “bonjour toujours avec moi” which means just ‘have fun with me’. These are just a few examples of the most common phrases used to address dogs in France. Although some of these phrases might look silly to you, knowing how to say dog in French is a very important skill for owners to learn. You wouldn’t want your dog to get hurt because you weren’t able to say the right phrase when you bring him home.
